19-year-old in jail for dating 17-year-old

A Sturgeon Bay teen is currently in jail for dating his 17-year-old girlfriend. The teen, 19, was first charged with misdemeanor third- and fourth-degree sexual assault about a year ago.

Police issued the charges after receiving reports that the then-18-year-old had engaged in sexual acts with his then-15-year-old girlfriend. The girl had told friends about her relationship, and stories spread from them to teachers, police, and prosecutors.

The boy issued a no contest plea to the original charges, but was found guilty and was sentenced to probation, including having no contact with the girl. This September, the two were caught meeting up, and the 19-year-old was placed in jail.

Now, the teen and his family hope a judge will revoke his probation and he will receive the shortest jail sentence possible. If he does not receive a deal, the boy could face up to three years in prison and registration into the state's sex offender registry.
