According to officials with the Columbia County Sheriff's Department, the suspects are facing charges relating to the theft of more than $4,500 in computers. The four suspects, 26 year-old James I. Cross; 24 year-old Laderin T. Moore; 27 year-old Shriley L. Staten, and 20 year-old Jozetta V. Payne, are accused of taking shopping carts containing laptop computers and other items through an emergency exit in the Tire and Lube area of the Portage Wal-Mart at about 2:24 p.m. Friday, setting off a door alarm. Police say the stolen items were placed into the back of an SUV, which was driven away quickly, without the rear hatch closed, causing some items to fall out. A Wal-Mart employee sitting nearby in his truck on break, spotted the activity and called 911, giving a description of the vehicle and its occupants. After a search along the interstate and highways near Portage, authorities spotted the vehicle near Highway 33 and Interstate 39, where the four suspects were taken into custody without incident, police said.
