Witness Protection Program
The United States government protects witnesses to major criminal acts from being physically harmed or intimidated in a system known to many as the Witness Protection Program. The program is better known among law enforcement agencies as the Witness Security Program aka “WITSEC”. The program provides a witness with physical security, a new identity, and a new place of residence.
The program can be applied to not only witnesses, but also family members who are considered “at risk”. In order to meet eligibility for the Witness Security Program, the witness must offer substantial evidence that relates to a major felony.
Organized crime members, drug runners, and terrorists can be offered protection if they qualify. If a witness’s life is also at-risk due to testimony, protection can be provided. No person deserves to live under fear of being killed or silenced from witnessing a major criminal act. Because the program is so expensive, evidence of any threat or intimidation needs to be undoubtedly apparent.
This governmental protection is usually provided for life, as long as the witness never commits any future crimes. Also provided are new identities and regular pay that lasts until the witness is able to find a job. Local authorities are also notified if the person under the program has been convicted of a crime in order to keep them under close surveillance.
